Fremantle Arts Centre, built back in the 1860's is one of many history rich, fascinating buildings situated in Fremantle, Western Australia.  Previously used as an asylum, a hospital, a school and now a fantastic space to showcase the best music, arts, dance, theatre and exhibitions WA has to offer.

The WA Electric Company have been able to repurpose existing power points with high power RGB DMX controlled luminaires supplied by Integrated Power to accentuate the Australian gothic architecture and bring the building to life.  Digging trenches or any disturbance of the ground previously made the project unfeasible, Casambi overcame this issue.

Casambi to DMX controllers have been installed at each luminaire and communicate wirelessly to form a strong mesh around the perimeter of the building.  Each device has the capability to run independently or as a group allowing the Arts Centre staff to create colourful scenes in line with exhibitions and World events.  The project was commissioned by Holders Technology based on a schedule that means the building will illuminate in a warm white from sunset til midnight unless an event is on.  The first event scheduled being 'Fire & Ice' meant the building would be lit in glowing orange and blue colours slowly fading in to each other every night for a few weeks.

Mission: Provide a fully customizable, colour changeable lighting control system without disturbing the structure of a heritage building in the heart of Fremantle.  Challenge accepted.

Fremantle Arts Centre

Designed and supplied by the team at Sii Light, the lighting at Numa Italian has created an inviting environment with clear zones separating dining areas and showing off the new restaurant in all its glory.

A combination of warm indirect LED strip, super low glare spots and cleverly chosen pendants are all automatically controlled by the Casambi system.  Scheduled to automatically turn on when the restaurant opens and dim down slowly through multiple scenes throughout the day and evening, the team can concentrate on their service knowing the lighting is taken care of.

This restaurant was commissioned during construction and then tweaked during operating hours to make the most of the new lighting.  Whilst enjoying the new menu, the team were able to slightly adjust each of the luminaires to establish a new evening and night time scene.  Being able to make amendments in a live environment is a great feature of the system.  Wireless switches have also been added to allow for a manual override should it be required.

After recently moving from their former Perth home, the new Numa Italian restaurant in Manning has been beautifully designed to create a sophisticated, sleek interior.

The new lighting and controls at the WA State Equestrian Centre both ensure safety and have hugely improved the facility.  The installation was completed by the team at Boyan Electrical, installing efficient LED floodlights provided by Integrated Power.  

The new controls are completely wireless meaning a Casambi node has been installed on each pole to create a mesh network across the site.  Each node is capable of controlling up to 8x individual lights on each pole (driver dependant), in this case there are 2 per pole.  The poles communicate with each other back to a switch installed inside and are also controlled by the groundskeepers' phones using the Casambi app.  

Long range nodes have been used meaning the system can be accessed from all over the site, these nodes greatly reduced the installation costs as there was no control wiring between poles. 

Some pre-set scenes have been created for training and competition whilst schedules can be set to automatically bring the lights on/off to suit bookings and keep energy usage to a minimum.

With a strong mesh network now already formed at the site, adding further Casambi devices in other areas will be quick, simple and effective.

Providing new lighting controls without any digging or new cables across the WA State Equestrian Centre was achieved using Casambi.

WA State Equestrian Centre

Holders Technology were involved from the very early concept stages of this brand new School building in Melbourne. Assisting with the design stage all the way through to commissioning and handover ensuring a smooth process and provided the customer with a fantastic outcome

The majority of the building is automated via the in-built timer feature within every Casambi network. Sensors have then been used to increase light levels in areas that are occupied and wireless, batteryless switches in the meeting rooms for scene control. An iPad has been used to bring together three Casambi networks (300+ nodes) giving site wide control and allowing for remote access.

Quality ERCO luminaires supplied by Buckford Illumination Group made commissioning the project quick and easy, signal strength throughout the building is strong ensuring fast, smooth changes between scenes when required.

DMX RGBW linear luminaires from Coolon illuminate the four peaks in the main hall.  A soft glow can be seen from the outside at night and they will be set to reflect world events and holidays.

The large floor to ceiling windows throughout the main hall and teaching spaces have all been installed with motorised blinds, also controlled through the Casambi system. Again, using wireless, batteryless switches, the teacher is able to set a scene that includes adjusting the blinds. A time based scene then opens/closes all of the blinds in the building at the beginning and end of the day.

Jeffrey Green Building Services working closely with the team at CTM Data & Electrical have delivered a quality project.  Their onsite knowledge and workmanship helped to ensure that the initial designs were delivered to an outstanding standard.

Providing a fully automated lighting system using Casambi to a brand new, state of the art sixth form college on the outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria.

Rivercrest Christian College

Building the perfect wine tasting environment was the design brief on this project and Sii Light, working with Klaasen Lighting Design achieved just that.  The space has been lit primarily with RGB modular LED panels controlled by Casambi utilizing a range of scenes and animations.  A number of spotlights with indirect LED tape have been used to accentuate key features in the room including the wine barrels and artwork.

The system has been set up to create a fun, memorable wine tasting space and the flexibility of the Casambi network has meant that the room is ever changing.  Any singular colour could be selected for the entire room or an animation cycling slowly through different scenes can be selected.

Casambi was used to effectively create the perfect ambience for one of Western Australia's pioneering wineries in Margaret River.

Cape Mentelle

A fully functional and flexible lighting control system was installed throughout this amazing home in Sydney's Northern suburbs.  A mixture of push button interfaces and trailing edge dimmable devices were installed to provide the future homeowner with local control.  The Casambi app timer feature provided control for external lighting using the built in sunrise/sunset toggles to automatically bring the lights on at different times through the week & year.

This is a great example of how a project-wide control system can be implemented with very little hardware and no single point of failure.  For simplicity, non-Casambi wall switches have been installed with Casambi push button interfaces, this still gives switching and dimming options for each room whilst matching the GPO's and other sockets throughout the home.

Being clever with and making the most of Casambi's wide range of features has become a regular aspect of East Electrical's work where they creatively install and commission their own projects in and around the Sydney area.

Casambi's core features were utilized to provide a fully functional lighting control system to an existing residential property in Sydney, NSW.

Residential Retrofit

An outstanding outcome for the refurbishment of Level 6, respecting the Architectural importance of the space. Jade Cross Lighting led the architectural and engineering engagement while Holders were nominated for commissioning services and Eco-system products.

Australia Square is still regarded as a landmark building in Sydney and an icon of modern Australian architecture. With its radical circular design, usable public space, and its advanced construction techniques for the time, it changed the face of the Sydney CBD and architectural design in Australia.

The hotel consists of accommodation, riverfront pedestrian access, a rooftop terrace and restaurants that aim to provide interaction with the surrounding Swan River. The 4.5-star, 229-room DoubleTree by Hilton Perth Waterfront on Riverside Drive is the eastern gateway to Elizabeth Quay. The five-storey base, coupled with an 18-storey tower, faces west, with each room having either a city or river view.

The development of the Perth CBD has historically grown to the east and the west. Elizabeth Quay returns the city’s focus southerly to the river. Joshua Prince-Ramus from New York-based architectural firm Rex who was instrumental in the Elizabeth Quay precinct, stated, “We’re seeing this really all over the world — a reclamation of the waterfront — for obvious reasons, so it’s exciting to be a part of that.”

Located in the heart of Port Macquarie, the Glasshouse Regional Gallery is a hub for culture, creativity and the arts. The Gallery showcases around 20 to 25 diverse exhibitions each year featuring contemporary, indigenous, historical, traditional, design and sculptural artworks. The program includes regular artist talks, workshops, educational activities and professional development opportunities for the community, artists and teachers.

A well-designed lighting strategy transforms a gallery into an immersive space, ensuring artistic integrity and visitor engagement. Casambi allows the Glasshouse Regional Gallery to adapt its lighting to suit any exhibit.

The Lyttelton Harbour Dry Dock, a heritage site dating back to 1883, required a modern lighting overhaul. Despite various upgrades, the exterior lighting system remained outdated, affecting visibility, safety, and the architectural aesthetics of this historic facility. The Lyttelton Port Company had unique requirements, including considerations for marine life, the industrial environment, and the preservation of the natural dark sky.  

This new lighting design concept developed by Pedersen Read, supported by Energy Light, focused on upgrading all existing exterior lighting with ewo R System GEN 3 R2 & R4 floodlight projectors. The choice of 3000K correlated color temperature aimed to enhance visibility, minimize atmospheric scatter, and contribute to the preservation of the natural dark sky within the heritage site. 

Holders Technology New Zealand spearheaded the implementation of a Casambi Bluetooth Low Energy-based mesh control system for all exterior lighting. The Casambi nodes, strategically placed atop each pole, ensured minimal wireless communication interference from surrounding steel-hulled ships. The wireless control system, connected via a NEMA socket, provided flexibility, reduced cabling, and facilitated individual addressing and dimming of each fitting. 

The lighting upgrade exceeded expectations, providing a uniform, consistent, and focused environment. Feedback from both dock users and the local community has confirmed the positive influence on both safety and aesthetics. Casambi’s wireless control seamlessly integrated with traditional switches and tablet control, enhancing user accessibility and flexibility. It also contributed to sustainability by allowing for future changes with ease without the need for any additional cabling. 

This project has received an award of commendation from the IES and a Highly Commended award from the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand (RASNZ). The latter recognized the commitment to sustainability and responsible lighting practices.

Dry docks require good lighting for enhanced visibility and safety during ship maintenance, inspections, and repairs. Thoughtful lighting design and advanced control systems are key to enhancing user experience while contributing to sustainable practices, as this Holders project amply demonstrates. 

Lyttelton Harbour Dry Dock

The HB Central redevelopment breathes new life into a significant chapter of Auckland’s CBD building history. A project that seamlessly combines two of the city’s oldest buildings, this ambitious project offers 900 sqm of prime retail space along Queen Street and an additional 2,000 sqm of offices and a café along Lorne Street. The original buildings of HB Central have a rich history, dating back to 1880 and 1914 when they housed the renowned high-end gentlemen’s fashion label Hallenstein Brothers, founded by Bendix Hallenstein.

In their pursuit of a smart and energy-efficient space, Morton Property Group sought the expertise of architects Warren & Mahoney and Mott MacDonald, along with lighting experts Novii. This collaboration resulted in a remarkable transformation at HB Central, aligning with Green Star requirements while preserving and strengthening the building’s original construction features and materiality.

With Green Star certification, carbon footprint reduction and spatial wellness as primary objectives, Novii collaborated with Morton Property, Warren & Mahoney, and Mott MacDonald to choose, design, and commission a one-of-a-kind lighting solution that fully adhered to the Green Building Council’s certification requirements. The brief centered around developing a smart and advanced lighting system that catered specifically to the needs and wellness of existing tenants and stores, while minimizing any impact on the existing structure.

The decision to implement Casambi as the building’s lighting control system was driven by its intelligent IoT solution, resulting in a substantial reduction in control wiring and labor requirements without compromising the automation system’s performance. By integrating Casambi gateways with EnOcean kinetic switches, the building benefited from the convenience of placing scene controllers and dimmers anywhere, even in challenging areas such as steel pillars, eliminating the complexities associated with traditional wiring and conduit installations.

In line with the Green Star requirements, the HB Central building needed to be 95% automated with motion sensors and dimmers to control light and energy use. This provision of dynamic lighting -intelligently activating lighting only when necessary – leads to substantial energy savings. By communicating wirelessly, the sensors minimize wiring requirements, reducing carbon emissions during installation. Furthermore, the lighting gradually dims over a 15-minute period when no occupancy is detected. The overall result is a building-wide solution that optimizes power consumption, decreases luminaire maintenance, and maintains a seamless user experience for tenants, all without the need for site-wide time clocks typically found in traditional automation systems. 

To fulfill Green Star requirements, the office spaces are adorned with contemporary linear task lighting complemented by a soft, indirect lighting scheme, creating a sense of openness and well-being. Through the strategic use of indirect lighting, which bounces light off surfaces, a pleasant and glare-free atmosphere is achieved. The integration of diverse correlated color temperatures (CCTs) adds visual interest, preventing the space from feeling mundane. Furthermore, the heritage wooden ceiling features are subtly illuminated with a gentle, tungsten-like glow, evoking a sense of nostalgia and honoring the space’s historical journey.

Troubleshooting lighting through the cloud

By harnessing the capabilities of Casambi, a significant portion of the commissioning work was efficiently conducted through the gateways, transforming the building into a connected IoT hub. This remote approach minimized site visits, reducing carbon emissions, and enabling Novii to conduct precise commissioning from their offices. Within a week of the building’s opening, the motion sensors’ linger and hold times were remotely halved, seamlessly optimizing energy usage without disrupting tenants. This achievement not only aligns with the Green Star rating and reduces the carbon footprint but also ensures future maintenance advantages. With the established IoT connection, Novii can offer additional services and remotely troubleshoot any lighting or control issues, while still allowing manual overrides for local lighting without compromising Green Star requirements.

The HB Central project represents a bold step towards redefining lighting and spatial design in New Zealand. It sets a new standard where aesthetics, lighting effectiveness, and spatial wellness coexist harmoniously while honoring the building’s rich history. The pivotal role of Casambi’s lighting automation technology in achieving this delicate balance cannot be overstated.

Blending old-world charm with modern innovation, this project repurposes heritage architecture in an eco-friendly way. Using Casambi, it achieves efficient lighting, targeting a prestigious 5-star Green Star rating while prioritizing occupant well-being through well-lit spaces that enhance mood, productivity, and comfort. 

HB Central

A floor by floor refurbishment over a 9 month period was a challenge for the client but soon they realised the advantages of implementing a Casambi solution. 

Engaging Holders Technology to design and implement each room configuration, the exisiting control system was not delivering the clients requirements and in some room was not operational.

The Holders scope was to provide the dimming, room status, local switching, Power outlets, Motorised blind control while minimising additional cabling for Power or Lighting.

A range of Casambi devices were selected based on switching or dimming luminaires, providing the room occupier the benefit for mood lighting selection including a welcome scene and absence scene to maximise energy efficiency for unoccupied rooms.

Providing substantial benefits for the Electrician, each room was pre-commission to allow an install and walk-away scenario with Holders attending on-site to make minor changes or support the installation. 

Our range of Italian wireless battery less switches and electrical switchgear combinations were also a major benefit for the client, reducing significant power cable and labour hours.

Featuring 286 rooms – including 15 suites with views of Auckland city. The refurbishment started in early 2024 with Casambi Technology being selected due to the ease of installation and functionality

JW Marriott

Located on Hobson Street, St Matthew-in-the-City stands as one of Auckland’s most remarkable churches. This architectural gem was unveiled in 1905 and was masterfully crafted by the renowned architect Frank Loughborough Pearson. The church showcases an exquisite blend of design elements, characterized by the Early English style. Its magnificent structure, built from white Oamaru stone resting on a bluestone stylobate, adds to its grandeur and charm. St Matthew-in-the-City is a testament to the city’s rich history and the enduring beauty of sacred architecture. 

ECC Lighting was commissioned to create a permanent lighting solution for St Matthew-in-the-City, eliminating the need to rent lighting equipment for different occasions. For this task, EEC turned to iGuzzini, the renowned Italian brand with a proven track record in illuminating historic structures worldwide. Given the client’s specific requirements, which encompassed accommodating diverse functions ranging from traditional church services to weddings and corporate events, each luminaire in the installation was designed to be independently controlled. This meticulous approach ensures optimal versatility and adaptability to suit the varying needs of the space. Another hurdle involved the installation of inground lights within the heritage building, which required considerable time and effort to obtain approval due to the building’s historic significance.

The design process encountered a significant challenge posed by the outdated 3core wiring that couldn’t be upgraded. To overcome this obstacle, the team devised a solution by integrating a Casambi module into each luminaire. This innovative approach proved to be the ideal method for controlling the RGBW luminaires effectively. The DMX luminaires were managed through the Casambi-DMX module, which could be conveniently controlled using the Casambi App on Apple iOS devices. For added convenience, a Casambi XPress switch was made available to set Casambi scenes and enable manual control. 

‘As a heritage building, our foremost priority was to honour and preserve the architectural and cultural significance of the structure. Our challenge was to ensure full functionality of the space without introducing additional wiring. The client’s requirement was to seamlessly support a wide range of functions and events. By training their events manager to control the lighting through the Casambi App, we have effectively reduced the need for traditional wired solutions, thereby minimizing ongoing maintenance associated with such systems’ says Wayne Reddecliffe, General Manager, Holders Technology, New Zealand.

Thanks to EEC Lighting, one of New Zealand’s finest churches is illuminated by Casambi in a way that respects and honours the traditional building.

St Matthews in the City

Casambi technology was chosen based on the benefits from design flexibility, removal of kilometers in control cabling, energy efficiency through daylight harvesting & presence detection and speed of installation (reduced labor).

The overarching focus was to provide the client with a control system with is future focused compared to traditional wired systems that requires unwanted complexity and further client investment to maintain their lighting control system.

With over 3,000 Casambi devices installed within the 12-story building which included luminaires, sensors, switches and gateways to connect each Casambi network for entire building control.

Zones throughout the building are either controlled via switches and/or sensors, to optimize energy efficiency with sensors being programmed for presence at 100% illuminance and then absence at 30% illuminance after 30mins, the dimming between these two illuminance levels are set for 10 minutes to allow a smooth transition and enabling a 70% reduction in energy for unoccupied spaces while increasing the luminaire life.

SDC Building

When Jim and Susan commissioned architects Patterson Associates to design a new home where they could share their art collection, they wanted the building itself to be a work of art that they could gift to Christchurch and Canterbury.

Pattersons’ design comprises four main rooms, each based on one of the principal rooms at the original Scarborough house: the dining room, bedroom, living room and library. In the new house, these rooms are arranged around a central courtyard and connected with glass link spaces that look out to the gardens.

The building’s high gables evoke the neo-Gothic forms of the neighbouring Arts Centre and Canterbury Museum. Despite these nods to the past, Ravenscar House is a boundary-pushing modern building – albeit one that resonates with the mystery and romance of the past.
